MAGNITUDE OF 6.8 CAUSED THE DEATH OF 6 PEOPLE, 300 HOUSES AND A CHURCH TO COLLASPE

By Amanda Quek

Disaster struck Tanganyika region, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania on Monday, 2005 December 05 at 02:19:57 PM approximately 10 km(6 miles) below the surface of Lake Tanganyika earthquake with a magnitude of approximately 6.8. It is located 6.174 degree South, 29.717 degrees East.

This is a rare example of an active continental rift zone, where a continental plate is attempting to split into two diverging plates causing the earthquake.

This destructive earthquake caused the death of 6 people, damaged 300 houses and a church collapsed at Kalamie.

“Dozens of houses have collapsed,
several children were buried by roofs of their houses,” said Dr. Jean-Donne Owali, a Congolese humanitarian worker in the lakeside city of Kalemie, Congo, about 35 miles from the epicenter. A spokeman, Michel Bonnardeaux said that most of the casualties were caused by falling zincs or steel roofs.

I think that the Government should educate the people about some safety measures, such as what to do during an earthquake, or get equipments that can detect any possible earthquakes and warn the people in the cities to evacuate. By doing this the amount of deaths and casualties might decrease.
